Cooking Up Confidence: A Collaborative Session with Groundwork North WalesThree people seated at a table take part in a cooking session, preparing food on pastry sheets laid on chopping boards. They use brushes and cups to spread sauce or glaze over fillings. The setting appears to be a community room, with a purple Vision Support banner visible in the background.

Following the fantastic Aging Well event at Tŷ Pawb, Wrexham earlier this summer, Vision Support was delighted to partner with Groundwork North Wales for a collaborative and hands-on cooking session — and what a morning it was!

In November, Vision Support’s Kara Rogers and James Farr teamed up with Teleri Jones and Jo Pearce from Groundwork for a fun and educational kitchen session all about air fryer cooking, featuring the deliciously simple topic of cheese, leek, and ham pasties.

Cooking with Confidence — and Accessibility in Mind

For Groundwork, this was a first: delivering a session with participants living with a vision impairment. To support the learning, our team — both Vision Rehabilitation Specialists — worked closely with Groundwork’s kitchen facilitators to adapt the session.

From low-vision simulation glasses to guidance on how lighting and contrast affect different eye conditions, the session raised awareness while building confidence. Participants were able to work independently where possible, receive peer support and encouragement, and positively interact with others.

What We Covered

Throughout the session, the group explored:

  • Planning, preparing, and grading an activity

  • Accessing recipes using Smart tech like Alexa

  • Safe and efficient knife skills

  • Using contrasting colours for improved visibility

  • Tips and tricks for getting the most out of an air fryer

  • Tools, strategies, and confidence to cook independently

And of course… how to cook a seriously tasty pasty!

A Morning of Learning and Laughter

The atmosphere was full of shared stories, laughter, and learning. The session left everyone inspired and energised. Feedback from participants and staff was glowing, and even the Groundwork team said they left with new insight and awareness.

Thank You to Our Partners Close-up of pastry sheets laid flat on baking paper, each topped with small piles of sliced leek, red onion, and grated cheese. In the background, several people sit at a table brushing liquid onto pastries during a group cooking session.

A huge thank you to Teleri, Jo, and the Groundwork North Wales team for providing the equipment (including a talking air fryer), ingredients, and recipe for this session. It was a perfect example of collaboration in action, and we’re already looking forward to more.
