Community Transport

Getting out and about, particularly accessing transport options is one of the biggest barriers and issues people living with vision impairment experience. One option available is Community Transport which can take various forms such as a subsidised taxi service, a flexible bus service or a service delivered by your local council. There are often eligibility criteria’s to access these schemes and so we recommend getting in contact with your provider to find out more.

Here is a list of Community Transport providers in parts of North-East Wales, Cheshire and Halton.

PlusBus

Summary of service

Door-to-door transport for people who find it difficult to use public transport.

All vehicles are fully accessible. You can register for PlusBus if you are aged 80+ and/or have mobility difficulties.

Area they operate in

Chester, Neston and Ellesmere Port.

Journeys are available between 9am and 11pm from Monday to Saturday, and between 9am and 6pm on Sundays (subject to availability).

Call on 0151 357 4420. They will ask you for details such as your name, age and mobility requirements.

Bookings can be made between one day and one week in advance of the day you want to travel. You can make one-off bookings and also arrange regular weekly bookings with them (so that you only need to call them if you wish to cancel).

How much does it cost?

A single journey costs £3, and a return journey costs £5. Charges are per person and apply to all passengers, including companions.

Flexible Shuttle Bus Service

Summary of service

Journeys can be made for almost any purpose: shopping, meeting friends, appointments or to connect to other bus services.

How much does it cost?

Holders of an English National Concessionary Travel Scheme pass can travel free after 9.30am.

Dial A Ride

Summary of service

This is a door-to-door service for all residents of Halton who cannot access or utilise public transport for any reason. This service is fully wheelchair accessible.

Dial A Ride operates Monday to Friday 9am to 4:30pm.

How do I book a journey?

Call 0151 257 2414 from 9am the day before the journey. The service runs a 1st come 1st served basis.

Any medical appointments can be booked up to 3 weeks in advance.

The cost of this service is £3 each trip.

Cheshire Voluntary Car Scheme

Summary of service

The service is available to people who are without private transport or who are unable to access public transport to make their journey. Cheshire Community Action can help you with your journey to appointments i.e. dental, opticians, doctors, and social activities such as visiting friends or relatives. With a group of car owners each volunteering a little of their time, they can help you, your neighbours and friends with transport.

Ring and ride service

Summary of service

Flintshire County Councils Integrated Transport Unit will be introducing a new Community Ring & Ride Service for Flintshire residents. The new service will be a demand responsive service providing accessible door to door transport to members of the public who experience difficulty travelling on existing public services. The service will provide assistance in travelling to:

  • GP Appointments • Hospital Appointments • Other Health Related Appointments

How do I register?

How do I book a journey?

Passengers are requested to:

  • Give at least 24 hours’ notice of individual journeys, (however we will try to accommodate journeys at shorter notice where possible). Tel 01352 701234 (between the 09.00 am until 17.00 pm Monday-Friday)

How much does it cost?

Charge will be made for each journey at 45p per mile.

Fflecsi buses can pick you up and drop you off in the service area and not just at a bus stop. A bus picks you up at your request, changing its route so that all passengers can get to where they need to go.

Fflecsi is designed to be an affordable service, so currently normal bus fares still apply.  For fare information please check Newport Transport website. You can still use your season or pre-purchased ticket.
