Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

This condition affects the Macular; this part of your retina is responsible for central vision as well as the majority of our colour vision and fine detail.

There are two forms of AMD which are:

Dry – This is a gradual deterioration of the macular as the retinal cells die off and are not renewed. Unfortunately, there is no treatment available for this form of AMD.

Wet – This is the term used when blood vessels grow into the macular which can       lead to a rapid loss of central vision. Patients with wet AMD may have frequent injections into the eye which aim to slow the progress of this condition.

The main symptoms of AMD are:

  • Colours appearing duller

  • Loss of central vision

  • Lack of detail/blurriness

  • Distortion (wavy lines)

  • Increased sensitivity to light
